Apps from unverified developers now need an “advanced flow” (with a 24-hour wait) or ADB to install on certified Android device
This is Google’s new Android developer verification rule for unverified apps that went live on September 30, 2026 initially in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand and a global rollout is expected in 2027.
For Onn TV owners, this matters because installing APKs through Downloader is the most common way to sideload and the apps from unregistered developers would just need extra steps once the rules reach your device.
So, sideloading is not banned and all Google Play installs remain unchanged.
What Google Changed
Android used to ask one question at install time: did you allow this source? It now also asks who built the app.
Developers register with Google and claim their package names and signing keys, and the Android Developer Verifier service checks each app against that registry.
Apps from verified developers and Google Play Store install normally from any source. Apps from unverified developers need the new advanced flow or ADB.
How Advanced Flow Works

The advanced flow launched in September 2026 and is deliberately slow. Users enable it through Developer options, confirm nobody is pressuring them, authenticate, restart the device and wait 24 hours. After that, unverified installs can be allowed.
Google says this update targets scams that rush people into installing malware. ADB installs are exempt from both verification and the 24-hour wait, so ADB still works as before for developers and power users.
What It Means for Your Onn TV
Nothing changes for Onn TV users yet, as this rule is limited to Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand and on Android Phones & tablets only.
Your sideloaded apps keep working, and Downloader installs work as usual. Once the rules expand, this is how installs would be handled:
| Install Method | Before Sept 30, 2026 | Now (4 Launch Countries) | After 2027 Global Rollout |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Play Store | Installs | Installs | Installs |
| Downloader, registered app | Installs after allowing unknown sources | Installs normally | Installs normally |
| Downloader, unregistered app | Installs after allowing unknown sources | Needs advanced flow or ADB | Needs advanced flow or ADB |
| Updating an unregistered app | Updates normally | Fails unless advanced flow is on, or via ADB | Fails unless advanced flow is on, or via ADB |
| ADB install | Works | Works, no 24-hour wait | Works, no 24-hour wait |
| Uncertified devices and custom ROMs | Works | Not covered | Not covered |
Which Devices Will Be Affected
The rules target certified Android devices that have passed Google’s Play Protect certification and ship with Google services. This applies to devices running Android 7 or newer.
| Device type | Status |
|---|---|
| Onn Google TV devices | Expected to be affected once the rules expand |
| Nvidia Shield and other certified Android TV / Google TV boxes | Expected to be affected once the rules expand |
| Smart TVs with Google TV built in (Sony, TCL, Hisense) | Expected to be affected once the rules expand |
| Certified Android phones and tablets (Android 7+) | Affected in launch countries now, globally in 2027 |
| Samsung TVs (Tizen OS) | Not covered (not Android) |
| Uncertified Android boxes (BuzzTV, Formuler, Ugoos) | Not covered |
| Custom ROMs and devices without Google Play certification | Not covered |
FAQs
Does developer verification affect my Onn TV right now?
No. Enforcement is limited to Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand. Onn TVs are expected to be covered when Google expands globally in 2027.
Will I still be able to sideload apps with Downloader?
Yes. Apps from registered developers install normally, even when you download the APK from a website. Apps from unregistered developers will need the advanced flow or ADB.
Will my already installed sideloaded apps stop working?
Google hasn’t said installed apps will be removed. The confirmed impact is on installing and updating apps from unregistered developers.
Can I still update sideloaded apps on my Onn TV?
Apps from registered developers update normally. Updates for unregistered apps only work while the advanced flow is turned on, or when you update over ADB.
Do I need ADB to install apps on my Onn TV?
Not unless you want to skip the advanced flow. ADB installs are exempt from verification and the 24-hour wait. It usually means enabling Developer options and debugging on the Onn TV and connecting from a computer, though menu names may vary.
Do I need to keep Developer options on after enabling the advanced flow?
No. Once the advanced flow is enabled, you can turn Developer options off again.
I can’t find the advanced flow on my Onn TV. Why?
Google is rolling it out gradually through a system service called Android Developer Verifier. Google hasn’t said when TV devices will get it, and since enforcement hasn’t reached the US, you don’t need it yet.
Conclusion
Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand are effectively the test run for the new sideloading rules before the 2027 global expansion.
We’ll update this post when Google confirms how the rules apply to Google TV devices like the Onn 4K. Until then, existing Onn TV setups keep working as normal.
